Aquascape IonGen System G2 – Electronic String Algae Control
The Aquascape IonGen System G2 offers a modern, highly effective approach to managing troublesome string algae—including blanket weed—without relying on traditional chemical treatments.
As temperatures rise and sunlight intensifies, string algae can spread rapidly, particularly in shallow or slow-moving water.
While some algae presence is normal in any pond ecosystem, excessive growth can quickly disrupt water clarity, reduce oxygen levels, and, in severe conditions, endanger fish health.
The IonGen G2 delivers a controlled, targeted solution for ponds and water features, helping maintain clear, healthy water through the release of carefully regulated copper ions.
How the IonGen System Works
At the core of the IonGen G2 is an adjustable control panel that sends timed electrical signals to a copper probe. When activated, the probe attempts to transfer a small, positively charged copper ion from one side to the other. Flowing water then carries these ions into the pond, where they begin to inhibit algae growth at a cellular level.
This system ensures consistent, controlled algae management without the harsh impact of chemicals, making it safe for use in well-maintained ponds and landscaped water features.
Adjustable Control for Safe & Effective Treatment
The IonGen’s control panel includes simple up/down buttons for adjusting ion output:
Setting 1: Minimum copper release for general maintenance
Setting 10: Maximum output for dealing with active algae growth
Aquascape recommend maintaining the lowest effective setting and increasing output only when algae first appears.
Copper concentration must remain below 0.25 ppm for safe operation. Each IonGen includes a copper test kit, allowing users to monitor levels easily before and during treatment.
Water Parameters & Installation Requirements
For the IonGen G2 to operate safely and efficiently, water hardness must fall within a suitable range:
Carbonate Hardness (KH): 100–250 ppm
(Equivalent to 5–14° KH)
Testing kits for KH and copper levels are included with every unit.
If readings fall outside this range:
Low KH: Add an alkalinity booster
High KH: Perform a partial water change
Correct KH ensures proper ionisation, protects fish health, and prolongs probe life.
Probe Placement for Optimal Performance
Probe positioning is crucial. The probe must be placed in an area with strong, consistent water flow to prevent copper ions from drifting back toward the probe, which would cause build up and reduce service life.
Aquascape recommend:
New installations: Use the included G2 Flow Chamber, installed inline on any high-flow pipe (commonly between skimmer and filter).
Retrofit installations: Place the probe directly inside a skimmer chamber with steady water movement.
